Antique Sterling Chain Mesh Bag Coin Purse Deitsch Brothers NY

Offered is a captivating antique sterling mesh bag.  The hinged frame of the chain mail coin purse is heavily decorated on both sides.  It features winged griffins at the top near the kiss lock closure, and a rather stylized repeating lotus flower motif that extends toward the hinges at the side. These are embellished with hand chased or engraved accents.  The medallion at the center of the ringed mesh features a griffin on one side and raised initials on the back.  The edge of the frame bears the D in a diamond (with dots at the four corners) hallmark, sterling, and the number 1343.  This was a trademark used by the New York based firm Deitsch Bros. from 1896 to 1922, and more found on more common classic Art Nouveau designs.

The purse is 4″ in diameter as measured to the outside of the frame across the center.  It is 7 7/8″ when suspended from the oval ring at the top of the heavy gouge chain to the bottom of the bag.  Though a bit heavy to be included in a lady’s chatelaine, these were often worn on display extended from a belt clip. There are no condition issues. Total weight:  119.6 grams
